As many of you know, BearWolf Books and I recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the book 'Carmilla & Other Tales', a collection of three short stories steeped in the Victorian Gothic style that I'm so passionate about.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your incredible support of my Kickstarter campaign. Your commitment to this project means so much to me, and I am sincerely touched by the trust you have placed in me and in this book.

Comme beaucoup d'entre vous le savent, avec BearWolf Books, nous avons récemment lancé une campagne Kickstarter pour financer le livre "Carmilla & Other Tales", un recueil de trois nouvelles imprégnées du style gothique et victorien qui me passionne tant.

Je tiens à exprimer ma plus profonde gratitude à chacun d'entre vous pour votre incroyable soutien à ma campagne Kickstarter . Votre engagement envers ce projet signifie énormément pour moi, et je suis sincèrement touché par la confiance que vous avez placée en moi et en ce livre.

Today I'd like to tell you about a new adventure in the creation of this book ... 

One of the most important elements, and one that gave me a great deal of trouble, was the design of the book cover! It's with great enthusiasm that I share with you the behind-the-scenes story of this artistic creation, the fruit of the talent of my partner, Yoann Lossel.

Aujourd'hui, je viens vous parler d'une nouvelle aventure dans la création de cet ouvrage ... 
L'un des éléments les plus important et qui m'a donné beaucoup de fil à retordre fut la conception de la couverture du livre ! C'est aujourd’hui avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme que je partage avec vous les coulisses de cette création artistique, fruit du talent de mon compagnon, Yoann Lossel.

Who doesn't choose a book by the look on its face? I have to admit that I often rely on the cover or back cover to choose my next book, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. 

Choosing the cover of a book is vitally important, as it is the reader's first visual and emotional impression of the book. So we had to think very carefully about what we were going to choose.

I wasn't keen on the idea of showcasing one of my close-up photographs. BearWolf Books and I share a passion for William Morris-style book design and the style of old books. So we quickly agreed on the direction we wanted the project to take.

We wanted to get closer to the old illustrated books with their leather or fabric binding and hot gilding.

Qui ne choisit pas son livre en fonction de la « tête » qu'il a ?! Je dois avouer que souvent je me fis à la couverture ou au quatrième de couverture pour choisir ma prochaine lecture, et je suis sûre de ne pas être la seule. 

Le choix de la couverture d'un livre revêt une importance capitale, car elle constitue la première impression visuelle et émotionnelle que le lecteur aura de l'ouvrage. Il fallait donc que nous réfléchissions minutieusement à ce que nous allions choisir.

Je n'étais pas enthousiasmée par l'idée de mettre en avant l'une de mes photographies en gros plan. BearWolf Books et moi partageons une grande passion pour la conception de livres à la manière de William Morris et le style des anciens ouvrages. Nous avons donc rapidement trouvé un accord sur l'orientation que nous souhaitions donner au projet.

Nous souhaitions nous rapprocher des anciens livres illustrés avec leur reliure en cuir ou en tissus, doré à chaud.

I wanted the cover to match the content and genre of the book. Because these are all subtle clues to the tone, theme and style of the story, helping readers to know what to expect. 

Despite my lack of drawing skills, I started to sketch a few ideas. From these, I chose one to present to Yoann, starting discussions on how to improve the beginning. I had planned to include an insert in the middle for a photo that we selected later.

Je souhaitais une couverture qui serait en adéquation avec le contenu et le genre du livre. Car ce sont autant d'indices subtils sur le ton, le thème et le style de l'histoire, aidant ainsi les lecteurs à savoir à quoi s'attendre. 

Malgré mon manque d'habileté en dessin, j'ai commencé à esquisser quelques croquis. Parmi eux, j'en ai choisi un que j'ai présenté à Yoann, lançant ainsi des discussions sur les moyens d'améliorer ce début. J'avais envisagé d'intégrer un encart au milieu pour y insérer une photo que nous avons sélectionnée ultérieurement.

I was particularly keen on my mouth concept for the title, but the rest was too rigid and empty. Yoann began by sketching a number of exploratory designs, trying to capture the mysterious atmosphere of 'Carmilla & other Tales'. These initial sketches laid the foundations for the final design by experimenting with various compositions and key elements that would reflect the essence of the book. The brushes turned into smoke and a little monkey on one side and a hat, brushes and contract on the other. It became much more detailed and harmonious.

Every detail was carefully thought out. This stage was crucial to achieving an accurate representation of the stories and creating an eye-catching visual. The photograph we chose, as I told you in one of my previous articles, was the one of Carmilla and Laura, because it suited the atmosphere perfectly and we all really liked it!

Je tenais particulièrement à mon concept de la bouche pour le titre, mais le reste était trop rigide et vide. Heureusement, Yoann a commencé par esquisser plusieurs croquis exploratoires, cherchant à capturer l'atmosphère mystérieuse de "Carmilla & other Tales". Ces premiers croquis ont jeté les bases de la conception finale en expérimentant diverses compositions et éléments clés qui refléteraient l'essence du livre. Les pinceaux se sont transformés en fumée et petit singe d'un côté et en chapeau, pinceaux et contrat de l'autre côté. Cela devenait beaucoup plus détaillé et harmonieux.

Chaque détail a été soigneusement pensé. Cette étape a été cruciale pour parvenir à une représentation précise des histoires et pour créer un visuel qui attire l'œil. La photographie que nous avons choisie, comme je vous l'avais dit dans un de mes articles précédents, a été la photo de Carmilla et Laura, car elle correspondait tout à fait à l'atmosphère et que nous l'aimions tous beaucoup !

Once the design had been finalised and approved, it was time to add colour and life to the illustration. Shades, tints and contrasts were carefully chosen to evoke the mood and tone of the book. Initially, we decided on a green cover. Then, as we went along and through the choice of photography we came to the conclusion that a beautiful burgundy would actually be much more appropriate and gorgeous!

Une fois le dessin finalisé et approuvé, est venu le moment d'ajouter de la couleur et de la vie à l'illustration. Les nuances, les teintes et les contrastes ont été soigneusement choisis pour évoquer l'ambiance et le ton du livre. Au début, nous étions parties sur une couverture verte. Puis, au fur et à mesure et par le biais du choix de la photographie nous sommes arrivés à la conclusion qu'un beau bordeaux serait en fait bien plus approprié et magnifique !

I'm extremely grateful to Yoann for his incredible work on the cover of "Carmilla & other Tales". His talent and creativity really brought the essence of my book to life, and I can't wait for you all to see it "in real life".
