"Carmilla" - Scene IV - The Painting

Today I wanted to talk to you about the photo of Carmilla and the portrait. It's a key moment in the story. 
Aujourd’hui, j'avais envie de vous parler de la photo de Carmilla et du portrait. C'est un moment clé de l'histoire. 

Like the intimate photo of Carmilla and Laura I told you about a short while ago, this photograph was taken at the Château de Josselin.

Tout comme la photo intime de Carmilla et Laura dont je vous parlais il y a peu, cette photographie a été prise au Château de Josselin.

Located in the Morbihan region of Brittany, Château de Josselin was built around 1490-1520 and has belonged to the House of Rohan, a very powerful French noble family, particularly in the Middle Ages. It is still inhabited by the Duke of Rohan (14th) and his family.

Situé dans le Morbihan, en Bretagne, le Château de Josselin, fut construit approximativement en 1490-1520. Il appartient depuis sa construction à la Maison de Rohan, famille de la noblesse française très puissante, notamment au Moyen Âge. Actuellement, il est d'ailleurs toujours habité par un Duc de Rohan (le 14ème) et sa famille.

During our scouting trip with Yoann, I spotted the pretty living room, beautifully furnished, with a piano, a large window, a luxurious tapestry with aesthetic motifs and chandeliers on the wall.  The perfect castle room for my Gothic romance scene!

Lors de notre repérage avec Yoann, j'avais repéré le joli salon, magnifiquement meublé, avec un piano, une grande fenêtre, une tapisserie luxueuse aux motifs esthétiques et des chandeliers au mur.  La parfaite salle de château pour ma scène de roman gothique !

When I got home, I prepared my sketches to think about my composition. Here's one of them! Rozenn's charisma and Carmilla's ecstatic smile are right up there!

Rentrée chez moi, j'ai préparé mes croquis, pour réfléchir à ma composition. En voici un! On y retrouve tout à fait le charisme de Rozenn et le sourire extasié de Carmilla!

This photograph was to feature Carmilla looking at an old painting that had reappeared. So I had to build this painting before the fateful day of the shoot.

Cette photographie devait mettre en scène Carmilla, regardant un vieux tableau réapparu. Il me fallait donc construire ce tableau avant le jour fatidique du shooting.

It's a portrait of Elisabeth Báthory mixed with Rozenn's face.
Il s'agit d'un portrait D'Elisabeth Báthory mélangé avec le visage de Rozenn.

Elisabeth Báthory was a 16th-century Hungarian countess who inspired numerous stories and legends, including that she bathed in the blood of her victims to keep herself young - earning her the nicknames "The Bloody Countess" and "Countess Dracula", among others. She's a character dear to my heart, and I was delighted to be able to incorporate this wink into my work.

Elisabeth Báthory était une comtesse hongroise du XVIème siècle ayant inspiré de nombreuses histoires et légendes, selon lesquelles elle se serait baignée dans le sang de ses victimes pour garder sa jeunesse — ce qui lui valu, entre autres, les surnoms de « Comtesse sanglante » ou de « Comtesse Dracula ». C'est un personnage qui est cher à mon cœur et j'étais aux anges de pouvoir glisser ce clin d’œil dans mon travail.

A bit of photoshop, some elbow grease and voilà! An antique painting that's truer to life. Currently in my living room, a few visitors are asking me if this is one of my ancestors...

Un coup de photoshop, de l'huile de coude et hop ! Un tableau ancien plus vrai que nature. Actuellement dans mon salon, quelques visiteurs me demandent si c'est une de mes ancêtres...
