Retour en Angleterre, voyage de nos 3 années ensemble 💖 : départ de Dieppe à minuit, arrivée à Newhaven à quatre heure du matin...

Lorsque nous avons envisagé ce nouveau voyage, nous avons souhaité lui donner la tonalité d'un road trip. Avancer de jour en jour vers une destination inspirante, tout en profitant de chaque étape pour visiter un endroit qui nous attire, ou que nous souhaitons découvrir depuis longtemps...

The Watts Cemetery Chapel is our first step. We really wanted to visit this unusual place, Arts and Craft gem. We were not disappointed! For us it was a real favorite! There are no words to describe the emotion and beauty that emerges from this building.

In the early morning, we climbed into the cemetery to meet the monument designed by the very talented Mary Seton Watts, wife of the famous English painter George Frederic Watts. The contours of the chapel were outlined and we discovered, at first sight, a red brick structure ornamented with motifs of Celtic inspiration. The building is imposing and hides a treasure of delicacy in his heart.

La Watts Cemetery Chapel est notre première étape. Nous avions très envie de visiter ce lieu insolite, joyaux de l'Arts and Craft. Nous n'avons pas été déçus! Pour nous ça a été un véritable coup de coeur ! Il n'ya a pas de mots pour décrire l'émotion et la beauté qui se dégage de cet édifice. 

Au petit matin, nous sommes montés dans le cimetière à la rencontre du monument designé par la très talentueuse Mary Seton Watts, femme du célèbre peintre anglais George Frederic Watts. Les contours de la chapelle se dessinaient et nous avons découvert, au premier abord, une structure de briques rouge ornementée de motifs d'inspiration celtique. L'édifice est imposant et cache un trésor de délicatesse en son coeur.

The door passed, the brightness of the place is obvious to you! The chapel appears in all its splendor: the frescoes all in relief and colorful are truly sublime and difficult to capture in photos. We let ourselves be absorbed by the many details, the reflections of gilding, the harmony of colors. It is a soothing place.

La porte passée, l'éclat du lieu vous saute aux yeux! La chapelle apparaît dans toute sa splendeur : les fresques toutes en relief et colorées sont véritablement sublimes et difficile à capter en photos. On se laisse absorber par les nombreux détails, les reflets des dorures, l'harmonie des couleurs. C'est un endroit apaisant et très touchant.

The artist couple, linked to the Arts and Craft movement and Victorian painting, settled in the region to escape the gloom and fog of London. The two characters are touching: him, fervent socialist like William Morris, indignant at the misery of his time. Her, progressive suffragette, founder of an artistic and artisanal community. Love is at the center of their work, as this quote by Mary Watts emphasizes: "There is no art without love."

On the site, we visited the Watts gallery and Watts studio. The painter, a great portraitist of his time, was passionate about mythology and made many beautiful paintings on this subject, such as the myth of Eurydice or Clytie.

Le couple d'artistes, lié au mouvement Arts and Craft et à la peinture victorienne, s'est installé dans la region pour fuir la morosité et la brume Londonienne. Les deux personnages sont touchants : lui fervent socialiste à l'instar de William Morris, indigné par la misère de son époque. Elle, suffragette progressiste fondatrice d'un regroupement artistique et artisanal. L'amour est au centre de leur travail comme le souligne cette citation de Mary Watts : "Il n'y a pas d'art sans amour."

Sur le site, nous avons visité la galerie et le studio des Watts. Le peintre, grand portraitiste de son temps, était passionné par la mythologie et a réalisé de nombreuses toiles magnifiques sur ce sujet, tel que le mythe d'Eurydice ou de Clytie.

Within the Watts Gallery there was also a temporary exhibition about the work of James Henry Pullen, as well as an exhibition on the De Morgan collection: William de Morgan, the Arts and Crafts ceramist and his companion, the painter Evelyn de Morgan.

Au sein de la Watts Gallery, il y avait également une exposition temporaire sur le travail de James Henry Pullen, ainsi qu'une aile sur la collection De Morgan : William de Morgan, le céramiste Arts and Crafts et sa compagne, la peintre Evelyn de Morgan.
