"Green Tea" - Scene IV - The Omnibus

For today's post, I wanted to tell you about one of the most incredible moments in my work on these illustrations: the creation of the omnibus scene. It's one of the most exceptional and magical moments of all the adventures I've had in creating these images!

Pour le billet de ce jour, je souhaitais vous raconter l'un des moments les plus incroyables de mon travail sur ces illustrations : la création de la scène de l'omnibus. Elle fait partie des moments les plus exceptionnels et magiques de toutes les aventures que j'ai pu vivre pour créer ces images !

Without giving away any spoilers, there's a key scene in the story "Green Tea" in an omnibus. I really wanted to illustrate it, but the complexity of the staging seemed insurmountable... I was discouraged.

Thinking about it in the background, I remembered that in my village of Paimpont, there was a simple but pretty horse-drawn carriage, pulled by magnificent horses, which offered a storytelling tour to visitors.

Sans vous spoiler, il y a dans la nouvelle « Thé Vert » une scène clef dans un omnibus. Je souhaitais ardemment pouvoir l'illustrer, mais la complexité de cette mise en scène me paraissait insurmontable... J'étais découragée.

En y réfléchissant en trame de fond, je me suis souvenue que dans mon village de Paimpont, il y avait une calèche, simple mais jolie, tirée par des chevaux magnifiques, qui proposait une ballade contée aux visiteurs.

In my head, I said to myself that it didn't quite match the scene described by Le Fanu, but that it would already be a great support for the atmosphere and imagination if I could create a scene in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage like this one!

So I got in touch with the owners, explained my project to them and they told me they had a genuine old omnibus in working order! It was completely incredible to find such an object next door to me!  And when we saw it, it was extraordinary !!!! A museum piece in superb condition, magnificent!

Dans ma tête, je me disais que ça ne correspondait pas tout à fait à la scène décrite par Le Fanu, mais que ça serait déjà un super support d'ambiance et d'imagination si j'arrivais à créer une scène dans une belle calèche comme celle-ci !

J'ai donc pris contact avec les propriétaires, je leur ai expliqué mon projet, et là, ils m'ont dit posséder un véritable omnibus ancien et en état de marche ! C'était complètement incroyable de trouver un tel objet à côté de chez moi !  Et lorsque nous l'avons vu, c'était extraordinaire !!!! Une pièce de musée en superbe état, magnifique !

That's how Yoann and I met the Maubec family, who were so kind! I was incredibly lucky and I'm deeply grateful to them!

Accompanied by Maëlla and Cloé Maubec, I was able to realise this image that was so close to my heart, that I thought was impossible, and that I managed to achieve far better than I had ever hoped!

C'est comme cela que Yoann et moi avons rencontré la famille Maubec, qui a été d'une telle bienveillance ! J'ai eu une chance inouïe et je leur suis profondément reconnaissante !

Accompagnée de Maëlla et de Cloé Maubec, j'ai pu réaliser cette image qui me tenait tant à cœur, que je pensais infaisable et que j'ai réussi à réaliser bien mieux que dans toutes mes espérances !

From left to right, my father (a former rider who was delighted to take part in the adventure), Cloé, Maëlla, Yoann, my brother and Daria. 

Maëlla and Cloé hitched up the omnibus with three magnificent grey horses and drove it along a small country lane so that I had a setting that suited the story. This gave us the opportunity to take a little ride on the omnibus - it's a dream! It's super comfortable! You can be warm inside, in a delightfully old-fashioned setting. Or you can sit upstairs and enjoy the air on your face and the scenery as it passes by!

Maëlla et Cloé ont attelé l'omnibus avec trois magnifiques chevaux gris et l'ont conduit dans un petit chemin de campagne pour que j'ai un décor alentour en adéquation avec l'histoire. Ce qui nous a donné l'occasion d'une petite promenade en omnibus, le rêve ! C'est super confortable ! Vous pouvez être au chaud à l'intérieur, dans un décor délicieusement ancien. Ou vous pouvez vous asseoir à l'étage et profiter de l'air sur votre visage et des paysages qui défilent !

I was honestly impressed by their practice and expertise! Very gentle and precise! I had a few concerns about how to capture a photo involving animals. These were quickly swept away by the mastery of the two sisters and the tranquillity and gentleness of the horses. They work a lot with voice to direct their horses and it's quite impressive to watch. Not to mention the fact that it's totally badass to have two young women leading a huge omnibus with three draught horses!

J'ai honnêtement était impressionnée par leur pratique et leur savoir faire ! Tout en douceur et précision ! J'avais quelques inquiétudes quant à la manière de capturer une photo impliquant des animaux. Elles ont vite été balayées par la maîtrise des deux sœurs et la tranquillité et gentillesse des chevaux. Elles travaillent beaucoup avec la voix pour diriger leurs chevaux et c'est assez impressionnant à observer. Sans parler du fait que c'est complètement « badass » d'avoir deux jeunes femmes qui dirigent un omnibus énorme avec trois chevaux de trait !

That moment had a profound effect on me.

On the one hand, as a former rider, I had come face to face with a practice that was quite violent towards animals, so I had given up riding. Witnessing this other way of doing things, gentle andin harmony with the animal, really captivated and enchanted me!

What's more, I met an incredible family! They could quite easily have refused to help me and not been touched by my project, which was of no interest to them. And yet I'd come to them to ask for a lot of help. Confronting such welcoming, caring people with their hearts in their hands was a great lesson in life, a very enriching encounter in human terms and a magnificent gift! If you ever come across this blog, I hope that one day I'll be able to repay you for the beauty you've given me!

Ce moment m'a profondément marqué.
D'une part, car, en tant qu'ancienne cavalière, je m'étais confronté à une pratique assez violente envers les animaux et j'avais donc renoncé à l'équitation. Être témoin de cette autre manière de faire, douce et en harmonie avec l'animal m'a vraiment captivé et enchanté !

D'autre part, je suis tombée sur une famille incroyable ! Ils auraient tout à fait pu refuser de m'aider et ne pas être touché par mon projet qui n'était pas du tout intéressant pour eux. Alors que je venais leur demander une aide importante. Me confronter à des personnes aussi accueillantes, bienveillantes et ayant le cœur sur la main, ça a été une grande leçon de vie, une rencontre très enrichissante humainement et un cadeau magnifique ! Si vous passez sur ce blog, j'espère que je pourrais vous rendre un jour la beauté de ce que vous m'avez offert !

To finish off this adventure, you should know that Cloé and Maëlla are on social networks! They share their passion for horse riding . They regularly take part in historic film shoots, because their know-how and equipment is a recognised goldmine! And it's exciting to follow. Cloé is also a model and shares her artistic work! I urge you to discover their world!

My only disappointment is that I wasn't able to put more emphasis on the omnibus in my composition, because my photo had to be narrative and respect and illustrate the story. But that's why I'm sharing all these backstages with you!

Pour finir sur cette aventure, sachez que les Cloé et Maëlla son sur les réseaux sociaux ! Elles y partagent leur passion de l'équitation . Elles participent régulièrement à des tournages historiques, car leur savoir faire et matériel est vraiment une mine d'or reconnu ! Et c'est passionnant à suivre. Ma seule contrariété, c'est de ne pas avoir pu mettre plus en avant l'omnibus dans ma composition, car il fallait que ma photo soit narrative et respecte et illustre le récit. Mais c'est pour cela que je vous partage tous ces backstages !
