"Carmilla" - Scene VII - The Bite

It's back in the pretty town of Rochefort-en-Terre, and more precisely in the sumptuous gardens of the château, that I'm meeting you for this lastest publication on "Carmilla & Other Tales", which I hope will be captivating.

C'est de retour dans la jolie ville de Rochefort-en-Terre, et plus précisément dans les somptueux jardins du château que je vous retrouve pour cette dernière publication sur "Carmilla & Other Tales", qui j'espère sera captivante.

In the short story 'Carmilla', the character Laura quickly begins to experience the symptoms of a strange illness... and it's precisely the creation of this moment that I want to share with you today.

Dans la nouvelle « Carmilla », le personnage de Laura se met rapidement à ressentir les symptômes d'une maladie étrange... et c'est précisément la création de ce moment que je souhaite partager avec vous aujourd'hui.

This photo shoot was one of my favourites! It was a warm April morning, the weather was glorious and there was no-one in the streets or gardens. I know the town of Rochefort-en-Terre well and I remembered that the castle and gardens would be wonderful for this scene, which I imagined as I read the story.

Cette séance photo compte parmi celles que j'ai préférées ! Il faisait chaud en cette mâtinée d'avril, nous avions un temps radieux et personne dans les rues et les jardins. Je connais bien la ville de Rochefort-en-Terre et je me rappelais que le château et les jardins seraient merveilleux pour cette scène que j'ai imaginée en lisant le récit.

My reference images included Dante Gabriel Rossetti's "Beata Beatrix" and "The Blue Silk Dress" by the same author. I loved the gentle, mysterious attitude of these two faces, and their frothy hair.

Dans mes images de références, j’avais en tête « Beata Beatrix » de Dante Gabriel Rossetti ou encore "The Blue Silk Dress" du même auteur. J'en aimais l'attitude douce en mystérieuse de ces deux visages, ainsi que leurs cheveux mousseux.

As usual, after a few sketches and some colour research, I went to Rochefort-en-Terre to look for my final angle and framing. Yoann was playing a magnificent Laura who had to sit in a void. Ouch, ouch, ouch! Not very practical, but very useful. What would I do without his help!

Comme d'habitude, après quelques croquis et recherche de couleurs, je me suis rendue à Rochefort-en-Terre, pour chercher mon angle définitif et mon cadrage. Yoann jouait une magnifique Laura qui devait s’asseoir dans le vide. Aïe, aïe, aïe ! Pas très pratique mais vraiment utile. Qu'est-ce que je ferai sans son aide !

Thanks to the permission of the Mayor and the town of Rochefort-en-Terre, we were able to set up in peace on the big day. To reiterate, it's very, very important to have the necessary authorisations to take photographs and to use them!

Grâce à l'autorisation de Monsieur le Maire et à la ville de Rochefort-en-Terre, nous avons pu nous installer tranquillement le jour J. Je le reprécise, c'est très très important d'avoir les autorisations nécessaires pour effectuer une photographie et s'en servir !

I'd brought my garden table and chairs, my beloved William Morris plaid, flowers from our garden (no, I didn't destroy the pretty flowers in the château!), a pretty old carafe to use as a vase and my oriental coffee set.

J'avais emporté ma table et mes sièges de jardin, mon cher plaid William Morris, des fleurs de notre jardin (non je n'ai pas massacré les jolies fleurs du château!), une jolie carafe ancienne me servant de vase et mon service à café oriental.

Once the scenery was carefully set up, I set up my tripod and camera and adjusted the settings, concentrating on Yoann who was peacefully enjoying the sunshine while I waited. He enjoys taking part in my adventures and his help and opinions are invaluable to me.
All I had to do was shoot and transform myself into my two characters!

Une fois que le décor fut soigneusement mis en place, j'ai disposé mon trépied, mon appareil photo, puis ajusté les paramètres en me concentrant sur Yoann qui savourait paisiblement les rayons du soleil en attendant. Il aime bien participer à mes aventures et son aide et ses opinions me sont précieuses.
Il ne me restait plus qu'à exécuter mes prises de vues et à me transformer en mes deux personnages !

For the first character, I played Laura. I braided my hair finely beforehand, hoping to add volume and recapture the frothy hair effect I'd so enjoyed in my reference images. I had her wear a pretty vintage dress, which I dyed blue, and a self-made belt.
For the blood mark, I have to confess that I did it in post-production because I didn't want to stain my dress or have too much risk of spatter. I was adapting Carmilla, not Scream in the 19th century.

Pour le premier personnage, j'incarnais Laura. J'avais au préalable tressé finement mes cheveux en espérant gagner du volume et retrouver l'effet mousseux que j'avais tant apprécié dans mes images de référence. Je lui ai fait porter une jolie robe, vintage, que j'ai teint en bleu et une ceinture faite par mes soins.
Pour la marque de sang, je vous avoue que je l'ai réalisée en post-production car je ne souhaitais ni tacher ma robe, ni avoir des risques de giclures trop imposantes. C'est Carmilla, et non Scream au XIXème siècle que j'adaptais.

Once I'd checked that my photos were in focus in the right place, I could move on to the next step. Shooting with my camera's remote control was easy, and everything went really smoothly. It was a dream!

Après avoir vérifié que mes photos étaient bien nettes au bon endroit, je pouvais passer à la suite. Les prises de vues avec la télécommande de mon appareil ont été faciles, tout s'est vraiment bien déroulé. Le rêve !

For the second character, I played a maid. Change of costume and hairstyle and I was off again. I had her wear a black outfit (a blouse from Ovate and a skirt I designed myself) with a makeshift apron. I accessorised with a silver tray holding a teapot and a sugar bowl.

Pour le second personnage, j’incarnais une domestique. Changement de costume et de coiffure et j'étais repartie. Je lui ai fait porter une tenue noire (chemisier de chez Ovate et jupe créée par moi) avec un tablier de fortune. Je l'ai accessoirisée d'un plateau argenté portant une théière et une sucrière.

And that's it! 
Et voilà !
