We'd been dreaming of visiting his house for a while, without really knowing what to expect. As soon as we found out we could go to Munich this summer, we couldn't stop thinking about it. For me, it was one of the highlights of our trip!
Cela faisait un moment que nous rêvions de visiter sa maison, sans trop savoir à quoi nous attendre. Dès que nous avons su que nous pourrions aller à Munich cet été, nous n'avons pas cessé d'y penser. Et cela a été pour moi un des points forts de notre voyage !
For those unfamiliar with Von Stuck, his full name Franz von Stuck (pronounced Stook) was a nineteenth-century German Symbolist painter. A founding member of the Munich Secession, he was also a sculptor, engraver and architect. It has an important place in our personal pantheon .
Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Von Stuck : Franz von Stuck de son nom complet (prononcer Stouk) était un peintre symboliste allemand du XIXème siècle. Membre fondateur de la sécession de Munich, il était également sculpteur, graveur et architecte. Il a une place importante dans notre panthéon personnel.

Unfortunately, he is an artist that our era does not bring to the fore because he was a convinced national socialist. In 1914, he signed the Manifesto of the 93, a document that supported Germany's actions (to find out more, here's a link: Manifesto 93).Like any art form that was supported and appreciated by the Nazis, it was quickly relegated to oblivion! This will no doubt rekindle the debate on the need to dissociate art from the artist!

c'est un artiste que notre époque ne met pas en avant car c'était
un national- socialiste convaincu. Il a de ce fait signé le
Manifeste des 93, document qui soutenait en 1914 les agissements de
l'Allemagne (pour en savoir plus voici un lien : Manifeste 93).
Comme
toute forme d'art qui a été appuyée et appréciée par les nazis,
il est rapidement relégué dans l'oubli ! Et cela malgré la qualité
et la beauté de ces créations !Ceci ravivera sans doute le
débat sur la nécessité de dissocier l'art de l'artiste !?

You are greeted by an imposing Amazon.

The villa, now located at 60 Prinzregentenstrasse in the centre of Munich, was originally quite isolated in 1897, as you can see from these period photos.
The pencil drawings are by Von Stuck himself. They were his building plans and designs for his garden.

Les crayonnés sont de Von Stuck, lui-même. Il
s'agissait de ses plans de constructions et de ses projets pour son
jardin.
Then you enter the reception area...
Everything is refined and meticulous, from floor to ceiling.
Don't ask me to explain the cage in the centre, I didn't understand its role!
For Stuck, the decor of his vestibule symbolised conviviality, hospitality, bringing people together, drama, dance and drink.

Tout est raffiné et soigné, du sol au plafond. Ne me demandez pas d'explication sur la cage au centre, je n'ai pas saisi son rôle ?!?
Pour Stuck, le décor de son vestibule symbolisait la convivialité, l'hospitalité, le fait de rassembler, l'art dramatique , la danse et la boisson.
From the vestibule, we enter the reception room. This is one of the most majestic rooms in his house, and I'm sorry that our photos don't do it justice. The light is subdued, reflected in the mirrors, and it's positively incredible! It's built from high-quality materials, creating a play of materials and textures. It is often considered to be the culmination of Von Stuck's artistic identity. It was also one of the first detached houses to have electricity. Von Stuck made excellent use of this to create a mysterious and enchanting atmosphere.
Du vestibule, nous entrons ensuite dans la salle de réception. C'est une des salles les plus majestueuses de sa maison et je suis désolée que nos photos ne lui rendent pas justice. La lumière y est tamisée, reflétée par les miroirs, c'est positivement incroyable ! Elle est construite de matériaux de belle qualité créant des jeux de matières et de textures. Elle est souvent considérée comme l'aboutissement de l'identité artistique de Von Stuck. C'est aussi une des premières maisons individuelles à avoir l’électricité. Von Stuck a très bien su s'en servir pour créer une ambiance mystérieuse et enchanteresse.

From the reception room, we pass through an archway/library into the boudoir. Its library is filled with works illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and other works, including the following!
De la salle de réception, nous franchissons une arche/bibliothèque pour arriver dans le boudoir. Sa bibliothèque est remplie d’œuvres illustrées par Aubrey Beardsley et d'autres ouvrages dont voici un échantillon !
Today, this room displays photos of the family. In the days of its owners, it was the dining room and smoking room, as you can see from the period photo.
The ceiling is magnificent.
C'est une pièce
qui aujourd’hui présente les photos de sa famille. Du temps de ses
propriétaires, c'était la salle à manger et le fumoir comme vous
pourrez le voir sur la photo d'époque.
Le

Then we enter what they call the living room and the smoking room, two rooms that are now empty. But you can still appreciate some of Stuck's paintings and the decoration on the walls.

nous entrons dans ce qu'ils ont appelé le living room et le fumoir,
deux pièces qui aujourd’hui sont vides. Mais où l'on peut
apprécier quelques tableaux de Stuck ainsi que la décoration des
murs.

To conclude our tour of the first floor, we reached the music room, which was absolutely dazzling!
Pour conclure notre tour du premier étage, nous parvenions à la salle de musique, qui était absolument éblouissante !
This piece, a tribute to the great composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Handel and Haynd, as well as to the Nietzschean concept of the Dionysian and the Apollonian, has something theatrical about it.
It was written for his wife Mary, who sang and performed in concert. He himself had no particular interest in music.
Cette
pièce, hommage aux grands compositeurs tels que Beethoven, Bach,
Haendel, Haynd,... ainsi qu'au concept Nietzschéen du dionysiaque et
de l’apollinien, possède quelque chose de théâtral.
C'était
une pièce pensée pour sa femme Mary qui chantait et se produisait
en concert. Lui-même n'avait pas particulièrement d'atome crochu
avec la musique.
In the decoration of this room, it is easy to find traces of what would come to inspire Klimt and, more broadly, the Viennese Secession (strongly inspired by the Munich Secession).
Dans la décoration de cette pièce il est facile de trouver des traces de ce qui viendra inspirer Klimt et plus largement la sécession Viennoise (fortement inspirée par la sécession Munichoise).

Not much remains of the original workshop, apart from the walls and the Altar of Sin.
There is a huge window that lets in a lot of light.
Il ne reste plus grand chose de l'atelier d'origine, à part les murs et l'Altar of Sin. On peut y voir une immense fenêtre faisant entrer une belle lumière.

Then the tour comes to an abrupt end here! The rest of the building has been completely stripped down to accommodate contemporary art exhibitions that have nothing to do with symbolism or Von Stuck's work. It's incomprehensible to us! Not to mention the fact that we were told off for stepping on a work of art that looked an awful lot like a child's car mat (?!?)! I lost 10 points in each eye and all my enthusiasm at the end of the visit.
We have the same problem in France, but it's still very worrying. It's not as if there weren't contemporary artists working on symbolism today.
We postulate that, given that this art was linked to the darkest periods of our history, it is imperative that we move towards new horizons and demonstrate our modernity. In the same vein, you won't learn much about Stuck, and especially nothing about his political views!
That's a lot to miss! It makes for an absurdly fragmented history and history of art.
Fortunately, there was a shop where you could find interesting books:)
Puis la visite se finit abruptement ici ! Le reste du bâtiment est complètement épuré pour accueillir des expositions d'art contemporain sans aucun rapport avec le symbolisme ou le travail de Von Stuck. C'est incompréhensible pour nous ! Sans parler du fait que nous nous sommes fait rouspéter car nous marchions sur une œuvre d'art qui ressemblait fortement à un tapis automobile pour enfant (?!?), c'était affreux ! J'ai perdu 10 à chaque œil et tout mon enthousiasme avec cette fin de visite.
Nous avons le même problème en France, mais c'est tout de même très préoccupant. Ce n'est pas comme s'il n'y avait pas d'artistes contemporains qui travaillaient sur le symbolisme aujourd’hui.
Nous postulons que, étant donné que cet art était lié aux périodes les plus sombres de notre histoire, il est impératif de progresser vers de nouveaux horizons et de démontrer notre modernité. Du même genre, vous n'apprendrez pas grand chose sur Stuck, et surtout, rien à propose de ses opinions politiques !
C'est quand même louper énormément de choses ! Cela crée une Histoire et une histoire de l'art parcellaire et absurde.
Heureusement il y avait la boutique pour trouver des ouvrages intéressants:)

Un livre sur la sécession de Munich et de Vienne.
Although the layout of the book is not the most pleasing, it immediately caught our eye as a way of understanding these two currents and the points they have in common.
Bien que la mise en page du livre ne soit pas des plus agréable, il nous a tout de suite tapé dans l'œil pour comprendre ces deux courants et leurs points communs.
- A book about Jan Toorop, which Yoann was particularly delighted to find! He's a painter he really likes.
Un livre sur Jan Toorop, que Yoann était particulièrement ravi de trouver! C'est un peintre qu'il apprécie énormément.
- And then there's this book on Stuck's photographic work, which I was really pleased to discover! Fascinating!And I'm not talking about the fact that he's often naked in this book.
Et puis, ce livre sur le travail photographique de Stuck que j'ai été super contente de découvrir !!! C'est fascinant ! Et je ne parle pas du fait qu'il soit souvent tout nu dans cet ouvrage
